Why do some formulas match?
A formula counts atoms, not their arrangement. Myrcene, limonene, and the pinenes share C₁₀H₁₆ — 10 carbon and 16 hydrogen atoms — but have different structures. These are called isomers.
Monoterpenes have a 10-carbon skeleton; sesquiterpenes have 15. Oxygenated compounds also contain oxygen. Sharing a formula does not mean sharing an aroma or biological activity.
